Welcome to the Public Domain Theater page.  More than just old movies are in public domain.  Everything from books to music to TV shows eventually ends up there.  On this page I would like to share a variety of things - mostly TV shows and radio shows that won't fit into our movies.  Take the time to watch and enjoy the following items.

Boris Karloff's "Thriller"

While Alfred Hitchcock was presenting and Rod Serling was zoning in a fifth dimension, Boris Karloff was hosting "Thriller" on NBC.  A wonderful anthology series of hour long stories.  This episode is the only episode in public domain.  It starred and was directed by John Newland - the same John Newland who hosted and directed One Step Beyond.  A really good episode.

Episode tile:  The Return of Andrew Bently

Burke's Law

This show was originally set to air on 22 November 1963. It was pushed back by the network's coverage of John F Kennedy's assassination.
This film is in the public domain because its copyright was not renewed in 1991, which was the necessary time for any film with a date in notice of 1963, and is the only public domain episode of Burke's Law.

Episode Title: Who Killed Jason Shaw

Let George Do It

For Old Time Radio Program lovers Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar was a favorite - and Bob Baily was the best of the actors who played Johnny Dollar.   But before he was Johnny Dollar he was George Valentine - a detective for hire (but what private detective wasn't?)

The few earliest episodes were more sitcom than private eye shows, with a studio audience providing scattered laughter at the not-so-funny scripts. Soon the audience was banished, and George went from stumbling comedic hero to tough guy private eye and the music from wah-wah-wah to suspenseful

Michael Shayne

Michael Shayne has been in books, radio, movies and at least a couple of TV versions.  Here's an episode from the 1960 - 1961 TV series starring Richard Denning the veteran radio / movie / TV actor.  The interesting thing about this episode is that you get an early look at the writing of Levinson & Link - who went on to create and write Columbo.

episode: Murder in Wonderland

Singer Playhouse

That's right the Singer Sewing Machine  Company (Mom - what's a sewing machine?) and their many fine stores, sponsored the Four Star Playhouse.  Each week a new story starred either Dick Powell, David Niven, Ida Lupino, or Charles Boyer in this series from the early 1950's.  This featured episode brings out the writer in me -  and a terrific performance by David Niven.  Get through the first 10 minutes of this and I know that you will love this story .

Tales Of Tomorrow

Some of the earliest science fiction on television - even tougher this was LIVE television.  Running from 1951 - 1953 this anthology series gave us some of our first looks at some actors like Leslie Neilson, Rod Steiger, Brian Keith (before he used the first name Brian), Darren McGavin, Paul Newman - as well as veteran actors.  This episode features one of my favorite actors - Boris Karloff

The Invisible Man

Before  the Fab Four hit our shores there was another birtish import, the TV series, "The Invisible man."  lasting for two seasons this was an interesting, modernized version of the clasic H. G. Wells novel.  It took the invisible man into a world of international espaniage.   Here's a look at the very first episode.

Sherlock Holmes

Probably no fiction character has been paid more tribute in books, movies, radio, and television than Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's immortal Sherlock Holmes.  This TV series is from the mid 1950's and is an interesting interpretation - and easy to watch.  I think I've found an interesting episode here to represent the series.

Five

When asked about radio, Rod Serling said that as far drama innovation the medium had been wasted - except for Norman Corwin and Arch Obler.  Arch Obler was most notably known for writing and hosting "LIGHT'S OUT", and then later, "THE DEVIL AND MR O"  In 1951 Arch wrote and directed this movie "Five".  A bit too long for our program I still wanted to share it with you.

Four men and one woman are the last five people on Earth... This is their story!

Arch Obler on Radio

Picture
Three of my favorite writers are O'Henry for short stories, Rod Serling for television, and Arch Obler for radio.  In the mid 1930's Willis Cooper created a local Chicago latenight horror program called LIGHTS OUT.  After working on this for several years he left the show with a young writer Arch Obler in charge, who would bring the program to national attention.

First payer has LIGHTS OUT episode "Fire".  The second player has the episode, "Ghost On The Newsreel Negative".  The third player has the episode. "Superfeature".

After taking a break from "LIGHTS OUT" Obler returned to radio with "THE DEVIL & MR. O" with more tales of the unusual.  The fourth player has 15 episodes of this program.  Click on the next track button to get to the next episode.

Dragnet

Just the facts, Mam.  OK so Jack Webb never said that  - Stan Freberg did in his parody  "Saint George and the Dragon Net" - Dragnet was a number one hit on early television.  As was a lot of early tevelvision Dragnet as a transfer from radio.

The Halls of Ivy

Picture
An NBC radio sitcom created and co-written by Don Quinn who is guilty of also co-creating and co-writing Fibber McGee & Molly.   The show ran on radio from 1949 to 1952 and on TV in the 1954 - 1955 season.  The series starred married actors Ronald Coleman and Bonita Hume.  The Coleman's had pretty good comedic timing and there us usually a nice romantic memory during the show for a couple  of minutes to give the comedy a sentimental moment by Ronald

Here is 76 episodes of the radio series and the original pilot - which had Gale Gorden (Mr. Conklin of Our Miss Brooks and Mr. Mooney of The Lucy Show) in the part that would go to Ronald Coleman.   Click below on the next track button to go to the next show

UNSOLD TV PILOT

Before Don DeFore hit it big in the sitcom Hazel in 1961, Here's Don in this 1960 unsold TV sitcom pilot "Daddy-O"  An interesting premise with some shots of the sitcom and then the behind the scenes of his real life - talking to us much as George Burns did in the Burn's and Allen Show.  Jean Byron who played Don's wife here would hit it big as the sitcom mom of "The Patty Duke Show"  Worth the Watch.

Ghost Rider

This 1982 safety film is about Kevin, who is feeling very sad and lonely after spending his first day in a new junior high school.  He meets a young girl on his bus ride home who drops a pencil and suddenly disappears. Is this mysterious young girl a ghost of a girl who died on a bus years before? Why is she so adamant that Kevin learn bus safety rules?

Like many films from the late 1970s and early 1980s, this film uses supernatural elements to keep kids' attention.
