LODI – Taking his years of experience with television comedy, Lodi’s Mike Mace has teamed together with a couple of like-minded friends and produced two entries for this year’s Doritos Crash The Super Bowl competition.
The commercials aired during the Super Bowl are legendary, from the Budweiser ads to Doritos and everywhere in between. Doritos has sponsored a contest for the past 10 years, giving amateur filmmakers, the world over, the opportunity to strike it rich by producing a Doritos commercial that will ultimately be viewed by millions of football fans on Super Bowl Sunday.
Enter the crew of Mace, Dave Binkley, Jay Boc, Brian O’Connell, Al Klesh and Rick Elliott with a special appearance by Crystal Sereno. Following the rigid rules of the competition, the team managed to produce two 30-second ads and get them submitted before the Nov. 15 deadline.
Their ads are titled “The Wish” and “Who’s Chicken Now?”
Mace and Binkley got to know one another working in non-commercial radio. They started a little television show similar to the old “Hoolihan” and “Little John” programs. They currently partner as hosts of “The Weirdness Really Bad Movie,” a cable TV show available locally. Mace says they offer old public domain movies, do comedy sketches and the like.
Binkley said of Mace, “I think Mike Mace is one of the funniest people I know. He’s added so much to the TV show. This is a comedy sketch with a product we’re pushing. It’s extremely soft-sell, but we have the Doritos in it.”
Mace said, “I learned from some of the best and have a background in advertising, media production and promotion as a freelance talent.” He said, “I never thought I’d be back on camera again.” He shared a sketch he did with his dad, Harvey Mace, and Big Chuck and Little John that was clever and amusing.
Mace is a Cloverleaf graduate and life-long resident of Lodi. Binkley has strong ties to Norton, graduating from high school there. His parents still reside in the city. Jay Boc is a comedian and former movie stuntman. He lives in Westfield Center. Rick Elliott was the cameraman on both clips. Crystal Sereno, a physical therapist for the elder Mace, was persuaded to play the part of the genie in “The Wish.” Sereno is from Akron.
Voting is currently underway to narrow the field from the 4,000 entries received down to 50 semi-finalists. Official voting will begin Jan. 5 to determine the top three finalists with the grand prize selected by Doritos fans and to be seen aired during the 2016 Super Bowl.
Fourty-seven semi-finalists will each receive a $2,000 prize. Two first prizes will receive a cash prize of $100,000 and a trip to the Feb. 7 game in San Francisco with seating in a private suite. Only one winner will receive the $1 million grand prize, along with viewing the game with the runners-up. The winner will also receive the opportunity to work on a creative project with Warner Bros. within the DC Universe (DC Comics, Warner Bros., Cruel and Unusual Films) on a part-time basis with details to be determined.
